As far as Chinese New Year celebrations go, the best may have been saved for last.
The Mississauga Board of Chinese Professionals and Businesses (CPB) held its first spring banquet dinner last night at the Emerald Chinese Restaurant in Mississauga.
Though Chinese New Year festivities have typically ended by now, that wasn’t the case last night. About 500 guests enjoyed a 10-course meal, participated in raffles, silent auctions, lucky draws and karaoke singing.
The event was in celebration of not only the Chinese New Year, but also in support of the Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation, a geriatric care facility that will receive part of the proceeds raised last night to improve services.
The CPB is a non-profit organization that has been representing Chinese professionals and businesses in Mississauga for over a decade. It provides public speaking programs, networking seminars and other services. It also often acts as a bridge for Chinese organizations that want to establish themselves in Mississauga.
Audrey Chiang, chair of CPB, said the organization is greatly involved in the community and raises funds for a number of initiatives. Over the past few years, the CPB has donated over $1 million to The Yee Hong Foundation, the Chinese Cultural Centre of GTA, Credit Valley Hospital, Trillium Health Centre, and the University of Toronto at Mississauga.

"It’s important to give back because we are here living in Mississauga, a great city, and it’s our job to build our society. We have a good living in Mississauga; we have a good diversity of people here and one of the things that we’ve done is give back to the community," said Chiang.
VIP guests in attendance included Mayor Hazel McCallion, The Mississauga News publisher Ron Lenyk, Dr. Joseph Wong of the Yee Hong foundation and Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Paul Tetzlaff.
Items that were up for bid in the auction included jewellery, wines, travel coupons and dinner certificates.
