Mayor’s Birthday Celebration<%=$font_end%>
Mayor Hazel McCallion’s 80th Birthday celebration was held at the Living Arts Centre. The event was attended by well over 1200 Mississauga residents, including quite a number of CPB directors and members. The evening featured a one-hour biography video of the Mayor, plus a special performance by Denny Dent and His Two Fisted Art Attack. Denny Dent’s show was very entertaining and amusing. With background music, he painted a 4 foot tall portrait of the Mayor within 10 minutes.

A number of CPB Directors and members attended the annual gala organized by the four GTA Chinese Business Associations, including MCBA, at the Le Parc Conference and Banquet Centre.

Dragon Ball<%=$font_end%>
To show its continued support of the Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation, over 20 CPB directors and their spouses attended the Dragon Ball to celebrate Chinese New Year and to help raise funds for Yee Hong. The event was well-attended by a who’s who of dignitaries throughout the Greater Toronto Area and all guests were wined, dined, and entertained to their heart’s content.

Peel Police Academy Graduation<%=$font_end%>
Andre Mak was invited by Peel Regional Police Chief Catney to attend the graduation of new recruits of the Peel Police Academy. Ms Gloria Kwan, the second female constable of Chinese descent in the Peel Regional Police Department, was one of the recruits graduating. Congratulations to Ms Kwan.

Shanghai Acrobat Show<%=$font_end%>
An ad hoc organizing committee was formed with representatives from CPB, MCBA and CAM at a meeting held in the CPB office. This ad hoc committee will plan for the upcoming Shanghai Acrobat Show to be held on April 14th at the Living Arts Centre. Group rate tickets will be available to the members of the three associations and a reception will be planned after the show.

More Yee Hong Hearings<%=$font_end%>
The Planning Committee of the city of Mississauga held a public hearing meeting at the city’s Council Chamber with Yee Hong’s Mavis/Matheson site as part of the agenda. The Planning Committee is composed of Mayor Hazel McCallion and all the council members. Over 200 Yee Hong supporters, including quite a number of CPB Directors and members, were at the hearing.
In addition to the presentation from the Yee Hong organization, Dr. Joseph Wong and Andre Mak, Chairs of CPB and Co-Chairs of Yee Hong Peel Region Capital Campaign, presented to the Committee a copy of a survey conducted by CPB in 1998. The survey outlines the urgent need for seniors’ long-term care beds in Peel, particularly of an ethnic group such as the Chinese seniors.
They also presented to the Committee copies of 18 letters of support from organizations such as the Mississauga Board of Trade, Mississauga News, Peel Seniors Link, CPB, MCBA, CAM, just to name a few. A final report will be prepared by the Planning Department to be submitted to the Planning Committee for their consideration before sending the matter to City Council for approval.
