Phoenix Ball 2002 - Taking Care of Generations, For Generations To Come<%=$font_end%>
It's only four years old and look how it's grown! A record-breaking 1,200 guests, including Ontario Health Minister Tony Clement, Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and Honorary Chair, Ron Lenyk attended the Phoenix Ball 2002 at the Mississauga Convention Centre. Smashing last year's record of 1,000 attendees and more than double the number of people attending CPB's first Inaugural Ball in 1998, this fundraiser has proved to be an incredible annual event. Even in these tough economic times, it's overwhelming and gratifying to have all of our guests, sponsors, and volunteers give us this much support.
This year the CPB foundation changed its focus to raise funds for five designated charities and organizations, helping them to achieve their fundraising goals. The five partner-recipients cross over into all aspects of our lives. They are the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, The Credit Valley Hospital, Trillium Health Centre, University of Toronto (Mississauga) and Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation (Mississauga).
For most of us, these five organizations have positively touched the lives of our friends, families and neighbours through their outstanding work and services. We are extremely proud of our Chinese heritage, and it goes without saying that the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto has helped to contribute and maintain that sense of pride. We have world-class health facilities here in Mississauga - The Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre. Similarly, the University of Toronto in Mississauga has educated our children and helped put Mississauga on the map for first-class educational facilities. Last but not least we would like to pledge our continual support fro the construction of the Yee Hong Geriatric Centre in Mississauga because they will provide the superior lifestyle and care facilities that our seniors so badly need and deserve. The CPB was pleased to award each partner-recipient a $20,000 cheque from the Ball.
A special thank you to all the performers who worked hard so that we can have a most enjoyable evening. The feature entertainment at the Ball were Hong Kong television and recording stars Rosanne Lui, Sylvia Lai and Lanny Shum, who put on a spectacular showcase of both Chinese and English songs accompanied by local performers, Terry James, Lydia Lau, Jane Lu, Leo Siu, Margaret Ho and Amy Woo. For the second year in a row, the guests were also entertained with a Chinese opera performance by Czerina Yuk Bing Poom and Michael Lo, the principal of Legend Chinese Restaurant, which was the title sponsor of the event.
A tremendous job well done by the hardworking members of our Phoenix Ball 2002 Committee, the CPB Board of Directors, all the dedicated volunteers (and their family members who stood behind them). This gala came to fruition through the vision and leadership of CPB Co-Chairs, Dr. Wilson Loo and Irene Cheng. We appreciate their time and effort in making Phoenix Ball 2002 a successful event.
