SUNDAY NIGHT FEVER AT PHOENIX BALL 2004

Annual Gala of the Mississauga Board of Chinese Professionals & Businesses (CPB) Raises $100,000 for 5 Local Community Organizations

Donation Cheque

Over 1,000 guests, including Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion, attended the Phoenix Ball on October 17, 2004 at the Mississauga Convention Centre.

This was the third year that the Phoenix Ball raised funds for CPB's five "partner-recipients": the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, Credit Valley Hospital, Trillium Health Centre, University of Toronto at Mississauga, and the Yee Hong Geriatric Centre in Mississauga. Like the past two years, each of these organizations will receive $20,000 from the proceeds of the Ball.

CPB is a non-profit organization that represents professionals and businesses from throughout the Mississauga community and is dedicated to linking them for the socio-economic well-being of the community. "The Phoenix Ball has always been our main event to support and promote projects that benefit the community as a whole," stated Lily Van, Co-Chair of Phoenix Ball 2004. Helen Lee, the other Co-Chair of the Ball added, "We strongly believe in strategic partnerships and are pleased to continue our fundraising efforts to help these five distinct and worthy local community organizations realize their fundraising goals."

Dance

Special performers at the Ball included CPB Foundation Chair Dr. Joseph K. Wong, Max Cheng, and Kwok Suet Ying, who entertained guests with traditional Chinese musical instruments. This was a preview of a charity Chinese musical concert to be held at the upcoming Mississauga Chinese Arts Festival 2005, which will fundraise for Smile China and the Hazel McCallion Endowment Fund. At the other end of the spectrum, the featured entertainment at the Ball was a throwback to the funky sounds of the 70's with "Stayin' Alive" and "Abbamania". Guests at the Ball quickly hit the dance floor and boogied the night away to a tribute to the songs of the Bee Gees and ABBA.

Special Performers

In addition to over 200 silent auction items won by bidders at the Ball, there were also many other winners of special prizes. Lena Wong won a limited-edition photo collage autographed by all of China's gold medalists at the recent Olympic Games in Athens donated by The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada). Lawrence Mak and Ashton So were the winners of $250 worth of Petro-Canada gas cards. Finally, the winners of the CPB Foundation Raffle were drawn at the Ball and they were:
